Cops Showing Up In Force May Be Why Our Crime Rate Is Dropping

Got an email from a reader who got photos of two separate incidents in an afternoon’s time span.

At 11:30 AM

This pic shows more than a half dozen cops brought by as many as eight cop cars at 11:30 a.m. They pulled up and began an argument with some men who were seated outside about getting a ticket for “it” being parked outside. The cops seemed to want the search whichever vehicle it was, but the men asked for a warrant which the cops didn’t produce. They hung around a while, while one cop asked one of the men if he had any “rock” on him, because the cop didn’t “want to arrest” the man again.

At 4:30 PM

The next two attached photos I took of another roundup at 4640 Penn Street at 4:30 today. One woman screamed at the group of six or more cops who eventually returned to their panel van — save for two who walked the premises before leaving — and drove off in less than 10 minutes.

I thought it so strange that two big rollouts of cops would come to different homes on the same block and, well, do absolutely nothing except get screamed at climb back into their vehicles and leave. Perhaps setting the stage? Feeling these people out? …Or just mistakes?

This is good stuff.  If you have any pics of anything, send em in and I’ll post em: jim@frankfordgazette.com.  Where are my citizen reporters of Frankford?  I don’t want to be the only one.

Crime Map Update

crime graphicWe’ve updated to the crime map page to include data from 6/22 to 7/05/09.  The results certainly confirm what the police office explained at the Frankford Civic meeting last week.  Pressure, pressure and more pressure is laid on the criminals to the extent that robbery is down.  Crime is down overall compared to the same 2 week period last year.

We did have one homicide which was classified as self defense.  There was also a rape.  The overall results are below.  Thank the police the criminals and bums haven’t converted to better a better life.  The boys in blue are keeping them in line.

2008 2009
Homicide 0 1
Rape 0 1

ag assault 22 14
Theft 56 46
burglary 19 12

Police Identify Irish Kitchen Shooting Victim As Aggressor

Buried in Philly.com:

Philadelphia police have determined that a patron at a Frankford bar justifiably shot two other patrons, including one fatally, during an exchange of gunfire early Friday.

A quarrel broke out shortly after 1 a.m. at the Irish Kitchen, 1257 Pratt St., according to Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman. During the altercation, a 25-year-old man allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot a 29-year-old man in the right thigh. Police identified the gunman as Dallas Custalow, of the 1300 block of Anchor St.

The 29-year-old victim pulled out a gun, which he was licensed to carry, and returned fire, striking Custalow once in the abdomen. Custalow was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital just before 1:30 a.m.

The 29-year-old was treated at Hahnemann University Hospital and released.

A third man was also wounded in the shootout. The 20-year-old was struck in the head and taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. His role in the dispute was not identified.

Police have not released the identities of two of the wounded men.

No criminal charges have been filed.

Murder in Frankford

crime graphicThe details of this crime are unclear because the body was sound subsequent to the killing.  I know that area because that was where my family lived when I was born and my grandparents lived there till 1964.  There are a lot of alleys running along the rear yards of the block.  It sounds like it was in the back of the 2000 block of Wilmot Street.  Link to the report in the Daily News.  This may be number 4 for the year.

Police are investigating the slaying of a man who was found with two gunshot wounds to the chest in a Frankford alley about 9:30 a.m. yesterday. The body was found under overgrown weeds between rowhouses on Margaret and Wilmot streets, near Torresdale Avenue.   The victim, a Hispanic male who police believe was in his mid-20s, had not been identified.  “There are gunshots every night, or every other night,” said Yvonne Flores, 40, who lives on the block. “You go to sleep and you don’t know what’s going on.”

On The Mean Streets Of Frankford You Might Overhear Discussions On the Geopolitical Implications Of Corporate E-Waste

wink on computers

Frankford local Chris Wink showed up on Fox 29’s 10 PM broadcast last night discussing a piece he did for his startup Technically Philly about how old computers from the School District of Philadelphia ended up in trash heaps in Africa instead of being properlly disposed.  It has the makings of a scandal.  But not only is it impressive that this young freelance journalist fresh out of Temple finds himself offering incite and context on an issue that is sure to be a hot topic in the future, but he’s discussing on a corner at Penn and Overington.  Way to go Chris.
