Why the sight was chosen for the shed

4 years ago we wrote a grant to get a shed and a good water supply. The water was located on Pilling street, right at the curb. It was suggested that it be placed next to the main on the street. We felt that that sight was too confrontational to the Pilling St. neighbors, so we picked a location behind some large trees but still close enough to the water that the project would still work.

We picked a brick facing so it would blend in with the community. We really tried to make it as nice as we could for the neighbors and still get water. I’m sorry that it offends anyone. Our grant was not picked then. This June out of the blue PHS gave us the gift of the shed for the park, quite a surprise for us.

We told anyone who came to our events about the present we were getting, we were thrilled to be thought of for such a big gift. Again we are only trying to improve the park not hurt anyone. If you are concerned about the park and what we are doing in it, please join us, we need all the help we can get. Let’s plan Overington Park’s future together.

Friends of Overington Park Needs Your Help

We try to cover the activities at our parks because they can significantly improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.  I’ve seen Overington park change over the last several years and it is entirely the work of the Friends of Overington park (FOOP).  I will not name the names but it is a small core group of people who have done this work.  The city stands by and waits for a group like this to come along and then they offer some assistance but if it were not for the Friends of Overington park, that park would be a blight on the community.  Yes it does still have some problems but they would be far worse without the FOOP watching over it.

There has been a plan in place for the Department of Recreation to build a tool shed for the tools and supplies the group uses for maintenance.  It would be on a concrete foundation and have a brick exterior.  It would be secured naturally and make it a lot easier to maintain the park.  A few residents of homes in the area have raised objections to its construction.  Now the Department of Recreation wants to take another look at the issue.

We would never stand in the way of people making their opinion known but we want to make sure everybody gets a fair chance to do so.  We have set up an online petition to approve the construction of the tool shed and move ahead with the project.  It is directed at Barbara McCabe, the Parks Coordinator, for the City.  In addition, it also goes to councilwoman Sanchez office.

If you support what the Friends of Overington park has done over the years to make the neighborhood better, follow this link and sign the petition.

Love Your Park at Overington Park on November 10th

Overington Park hosted our Love Your Park Day this past Saturday November 10th from 10 till 1. We had 52 volunteers come out and help clean up our park.

For the first time we had a great group from St. Hubert’s High School come out and work their tails off. The girl power was going strong on Saturday. They planted a Black Gum tree in our park and cleaned their hearts out picking up leaves and debris that surrounded the park after Sandy came through 2 weeks ago.

The JR ROTC, from Frankford High School felt the challenge and worked hard to keep up with the Hubert’s girls. As always the ROTC delivered a spectacular job, moving giant tree branches into a central location for pick up, planting a River Birch tree, planting daffodils, and winterizing our Cannas beds.

We removed over 80 bags of debris from in and around the park, planted two trees and 200 daffodils! Friends of Overington Park worked and supervised crews around the park. Neighbors came out, that use the park, and wanted to join in and help make the park a better place. Some rain dropped down for a few minutes at the beginning of our day but we had work to do and we would not be stopped. We left the park in great shape to go into winter.

Our thanks go out to all the good folk that came out on Saturday, and everyone who supports the fine work that our community is doing in Overington Park. We truly Love Our Park! Thanks, Diane Kunze, president, Friends of Overington Park

Overington Park Fall Festival 2012

This past Saturday, October 20th, Friends of Overington Park held our annual Fall Festival. The weather was perfect, crisp air, falling leaves, a beautiful day in our park.

We had a big crowd, a good mix of adults and children. Little ones romped through the straw patch to find their pumpkin, faces were painted by the good folks from Grace Alone Church, ‘Operation Glow In The Dark’ puppeteer preformed to a laughing audience, and apple cider, ginger snaps, and pretzels were served.

Treat bags filled with goodies were handed out, and our seasonal worker, Lisa, an Overington park Friend, designed wonderful games for everyone to play and enjoy.

Little ones showed up in costume as well as all the adult Friends of Overington Park! We were truly blessed with a day filled with fun, laughs, and gathering of the community, sharing the true treasure that is Overington Park.

Thanks for all the support given to Overington, it means a lot, Diane Kunze, president, Friends of Overington Park
