Mezalick Design Studio, LLC

Two years ago I was compiling a list of Frankford businesses with web sites and came to the Mezalick Design Studio.  That name didn’t ring a bell and I hadn’t seen anything by that name on the Avenue so I thought it might have been an old link.  Last year I was meeting with Father Steve Wetzel at St. Joachim and the wall of the room we were in was decorated with scenes from old Frankford.  It was really great and I asked him where it came from.  He told me Mezalick had done it as a custom job.  So I made note that I had to track down Mezalick.

Nidia Mezalick

The Mezalick studio operates from a storefront in the 4800 block of Frankford Avenue.  You would not notice it because their business does not walk in the door.  They create and restore church stained glass windows and other stained glass art.  The customer base is national in scope you can get a feel for the company by their extensive web site.

I met Nidia Mezalick this week at the studio having no idea of what I would find.  Nidia told me her story about her life and how she gotten interested in stained glass in the 90s.  She met her husband Michael who was working in Virginia at the time and they eventually decided to open the business together.  They quickly established a

New Stained Glass Work

reputation for quality customer service which allowed them to grow and they had to acquire the properties in Frankford which they now own.

The shop is a well equipped modern stained glass studio capable of handling the large windows that they are often called upon to restore.  Racks and racks of glass line the walls in a rainbow of colors and textures that is impossible to describe.  The majority of the business these days is restoration but you will find information about the new creations that have been executed by Mezalick on their web site.

Lighting restoration

Their most recent project was just shipped out last week so the shop only had some antique lights in the back that were being restored.  That project involved not only new glass work but also reconstruction of deteriorated metal, cleaning and rewiring.  They will be beautiful when they are rehung on one of the exclusive buildings downtown.

You never know what gem you will find just around the corner in Frankford.  Contact information for Mezalick Design Studio is on their web site.

PSA1 Meeting 10/26/2011

Lt. Casselli and Officer Andrews lead the PSA meeting this week at Aria Health in the cafeteria.  There were several areas of interest this month.

  • Elran’s Place located at Oakland and Pratt Streets was the subject of much discussion last month.  Since that time there was another shooting outside the bar.  The owner, Eliezer Torres has been meeting with Officer Andrews on ways to improve the situation at the bar.  Only three residents of the area attended the meeting but they made their views know on the problems the bar has been causing.  Mr. Torres pledged that the residents will see a big improvement in the situation starting this weekend.  In regard to the recent shooting, his cooperation with the police lead to the arrest of the suspect.
  • There are reports from several people of drug sales out of a house in Frankford.  The police have had previous reports on this location and are investigating.

The PSA meetings are only effective when residents attend them.  As Casselli frequently points out, the police cannot solve these problems on their own.  You have to come out to these meetings to have any chance of making it work.

October NE EPIC Stakeholders Meeting

From Kim Washington:

This is just a reminder that this month’s EPIC meeting is being held at CORA Services (8540 Verree Road, Phila Pa. 19111) and not at Aria Hospital. In observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness month, we will be hosting a workshop on healing, beautification, and self-esteem building.  Local midday host on Radio One’s 100.3 FM, Mo’ Shay Laren, we will promote the “Love Yourself Campaign” and encourage the women in attendance to take a pledge to love themselves. We have identified two organizations that provide temporary housing for women and children to participate in this event.  Ed Bradley from WOAR (Women Organized Against Rape) will also be hosting a domestic violence awareness workshop for children ages 4 – 9.  Women Against Abuse, and Women In Transition will also be in attendance.  In addition to observing National Domestic Violence month we will also be presenting a General Mills award to Ms. Sonya Saunders, from Frankford’s Tender Moments Daycare, for her dedication to early childhood education and development.  Please join us as we promote domestic violence awareness and honor Ms. Saunders.  If you would like to participate and need assistance with transportation please let me know ASAP.
