A Healthier Frankford

This past June, Health Partners Plans, Aria Health and the Frankford Community Development Corporation came to the aid of Frankford residents. The annual Health Fair provided fun and games for children while giving adults the medical care and information they need.

The fair which took place at Aria Health’s Frankford Campus consisted of screenings for blood pressure and Body Mass Index as well as face painting and other activities for kids. Volunteers, along with Events and Outreach Programs Manager for Health Partners Plans, Chi Dang, attended to the long line of eager Frankford residents ready to receive these much needed services. Dang explained that screenings like the ones provided at the fair are simple, but necessary, preventative measures that everyone should have access to. Health Partners Plans works to make sure that those who would otherwise go without testing and information are taken care of.

The event that has been going on for three years now continues to grow and to help members of the surrounding community. Certainly living up to their motto of “doing it right” Health Partners Plans in partnership with Aria Health and the Frankford CDC are making strides in the right direction to help everyone maintain a healthier lifestyle.

PhillyRising February Update

At the Frankford PhillyRising monthly meeting on February 10th, Sanya Brown updated residents on issues raised at the inaugural meeting in January.

  • The issue of the need for a health facility in Frankford was raised last month.  Jason Dawkins suggested that Aria Hospital offered the use of its facilities to the public.  Sanya investigated and found that the Aria Health Wellness Center is open to the public.   This is for exercise, using equipment at the facility in the ground floor of garage building on Frankford Avenue.  The cost is $29 per month and does not require a contract.  It is payable monthly by cash or credit card.  For more information open this pdf.
  • A resident discussed drug problems at a laundromat near Harrison and Tackawanna Streets.  Sanya noted that the information was passed on the the police at the last PSA meeting.
  • The issue of revitalizing the business corridor was discussed and the result is a new Litter Reduction Campaign which will launch in the Spring.  It will be aimed at business owners on the Frankford Avenue business corridor.
  • A career Boot Camp for youth is being planned for possible scheduling in May.

A citizens Engagement Academy is being held in Lawncrest.  We had one in Frankford last year which those attending thought was very worthwhile.  Anyone interested in attending this course should read this attached pdf for further information.

The next Frankford PhillyRising meeting will be held on March 10th at 5:30 PM at the Frankford Branch of the Free Library.

Frankford Civic Meeting Update

There were no active zoning issues to discuss at the Frankford Civic Association meeting on August 1st but residents attending brought some concerns to the table.

You can buy shots of liquor to go on the 4500 block of Frankford Avenue.  This is illegal but not prosecuted in Frankford and residents attending would like it stopped.  Drug trade continues to plaque certain businesses at Oxford and Frankford.  The presence of the bike patrol officers just moves them around until the police pass and then they get back to business.

Zoning cases that fall outside of the Frankford Civic area are:

  • 1116 E. Cheltenham Ave – Day Care
  • 1167 Bridge St. – Grocery
  • 1246 E. Cheltenham Ave. – Day Care
  • 5020-28 Leiper St. – Church
  • 2080 Castor Ave. – Church

Representative Clay has announced there will be a Town Hall meeting on the recovery house issue.  It will be held at Aria Hospital on September 19th.  More details will follow.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be held on September 5th at 7PM at Aria Hospital.
