Frankford Murals Reveal the Heart of its People

The design of the first three of the five mural locations in Frankford have been unveiled and the results, as judged by the residents at the meeting, are stunning.  The hours of interviews, meetings, walking the neighborhood etc. have clearly made an impression on the artist, Cesar Viveros.  He has tried to incorporate the wealth of history, tradition, hopes, values and dreams of Frankford into the project.

So if you were standing in Womrath Park you would be able to see all three of these murals.  If you are coming up from Center City on the El, you will also be able to see the murals.

There will eventually be documentation to explain what the images in the mural portray.  At the meeting, not everyone had heard about Lydia Darragh or the Frankford Advice, two of the more interesting historic stories involving Frankford.

The slide show below gives you a quick view of the before and after views.

The thumbnails below will give you a more detailed closeup view of the murals.  We still need the last two mural designs to be finalized and production will begin shortly.  The community will be invited to participate in the paining of the art work.  This is a unique opportunity to witness history close up.

Frankford Mural Locations Set

At the Imagining Frankford meeting at Campbell AME church on Tuesday April 17th, the locations for the Frankford murals were announced.  There are five locations that will be used.  At the Southern gateway to Frankford the locations are 4229-39 Frankford AVenue, 4248 Frankford Avenue and 4122-50 Kensington Avenue.  Further up the locations will be at 4426-28 Frankford Avenue and 4935 Frankford Avenue.  These locations were chosen for visibility from both street level and El level.  Consideration had to be given to the suitability of the wall surface.

Cesar Viveros is the lead artist and he has listened to the community over the last 6 months talk about Frankford.  He presented his design concept last night which will attempt to incorporate what he has heard.  It starts with the heart of Frankford which translates into Community, Family, History, Pride and Potential.  His task is to now express those elements into murals.  He presented some of his initial design concepts and I have reproduced only three of them here.  Click on the image for a full size view.

From here the designs will be finalized and then go into production between June and September.  There will be community paint days where people will be invited into the studio to participate in the process.  The process will be complete in September/October.

There will be another meeting on Saturday April 21st from 1 to 2:30 PM at Campbell AME church at 1657 Kinsey St.   The public is invited to come out and see what is happening.

Mural Arts Project Reaches Milestone

Cesar Viveros and Netanel Portier were at the Historical Society of Frankford on Sunday, the 29th, for the last group of video interviews of Frankford residents.  They have now completed over forty sit down interviews with people from every area of Frankford expressing their feelings, hopes, dreams, memories, aspirations and desires of and for Frankford.  They have done a fantastic job in reaching out to as many people as they could because they want our input into this project.

Cesar Viveros interviews Sophia Lewis

The interviews are source material for the artistic vision of Cesar as he begins to compile what will make up the eight murals that will line the Frankford Avenue corridor.  The interviews will be edited and produced  into a single video which will debut at the Historical Society on a date to be announced.  The videos will also become available on a YouTube page about the same time.

We’ll be following along with the project as it moves into the actual production of the murals and hope to document the process as it moves along.  Coincidentally the murals should be finished by the time we celebrate the 90 anniversary of the opening of the Frankford El this November.

It’s a good time to be in Frankford.
