New Housing Coming to Frankford

Gillingham and Tackawanna Sts.

NE Catholic Faculty House

At the Northeast EPIC Stakeholders meeting this month, Kim Washington announced that 12 new houses will be built on the lot at Gillingham and Tackawanna Streets.  The city has issued and RFP for the construction.  These will be affordable houses that will fit into the neighborhood.  This is only two blocks for the Globe Dye Works.

In related news, Geoffrey Long, Director of Development for Ingerman, made a presentation about the proposal to convert the former faculty house of Northeast Catholic High School (2501 Kensington Avenue) into affordable senior citizen apartments.  The owner of the property, Mariana Bracetti Academy Charter School, has no need for that building.  Ingerman is seeking community support for the proposal.  This deal is only a proposal at this point but most people at the EPIC meeting that there is certainly a need for affordable senior housing in Frankford.

Last Week for Peaches at the FTC Farmer’s Market

We took a look at the FTC Farmers market last week and I have to report rave reviews from the neighbors here on the block who sampled the corn and peaches.  I emailed Lindsey (the farmer) to see if there would be more this week and she reports that this may be the last week for peaches.

Coming up though: “The season is ending for peaches, tomatoes, and watermelons, but we’ll have lots of fall crops to fill the table.  In the weeks to come, we’ll start bringing sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, collard greens, turnips, etc.  We’re also excited about our winter squash haul this season–we have 5 different varieties that should keep us well-stocked through Thanksgiving.  And, thankfully, we expect to have the corn into October.”

The market is open Tuesdays, from 2PM to 6PM.  Located at the Frankford Transportation Center on the corner of Frankford and Bustleton Avenues.  Try the Peace water melon if you get a chance.

Northwood Civic Maintains Adams and the Boulevard

Junior, Frank and Joe

Again this month, the Northwood Civic was out at the intersection of Adams Avenue and the Boulevard on a hot Saturday morning cleaning up  that piece of property which is the gateway to Northwood.

Since the owner and the city choose to ignore it, Northwood volunteers rise to the occasion.  Thanks to Frank Bennett, Joe Krause, Junior, Mary’s boyfriend and the Cedeño family for making this a better place to live.
