Giving Hearts!

The Morgan Stanley Foundation is supported by each of the departments within Morgan Stanley. The Foundation has given Keep the Faith in Frankford much needed donations over the past two years.

Those donations go directly to helping us feed those in need through the Northeast Committee on the Homeless’ Dining with Dignity Program that operates at St. Mark’s Church. We have prepared and served over 500 people a hot meal and and have sent them home with dinner bags because of these donations.

There are very good people in our community who don’t need accolades nor do they want them. They genuinely care for others and do the right thing. Morgan Stanley does that, too! They encourage their employees to get involved in their communities and they support their efforts with matching grants and additional monies.

To our unsung hero at Morgan Stanley whose heart is in our Frankford community, thank you for all that you do! We also thank Morgan Stanley for acknowledging your efforts with their generous donations to Keep the Faith in Frankford!

Frankford Civic July Meeting

President Pete Specos returned to the Civic for the first time since his illness and lead the meeting on July 7th.

There were block party discussions about who can have them, why are some denied and that there are some having them without permits.  Some residents organize a block party and then people on the block do not move their cars.  Can they be ticketed.  There is a process but it required another permit and fee.

We need to follow up with SEPTA regarding the need for them to cooperate in keeping the area around the El stops clean.  They do it in other neighborhoods but not in Frankford.

Residents on Trenton Avenue had a block party and got cooperation from Rep. Dawkins office to paint the wall on the street that day.  Home depot donated the paint.

The next meeting of the Frankford Civic Association will be held on August 4th at 7 PM at St. Mark’s Church at 4442 Frankford Avenue.

Block Partys Top 15th District PSA1 Meeting

Lt. Gordon lead the PSA1 meeting on July 14th with some new participants in the crowd of 30 at Aria Hospital.

The issue of being denied a block party permit came up early and took up a lot of the discussion. Residents on block that have been identified as a nuisance block can be denied a permit by the District Captain.  This can happen even after they have paid for the permit and put money on the bounce houses and organized the event.  Lt. Gordon recommends contacting Captain Luca directly since it is his call.

Complaints about 911 calls that find no response by police are the result of higher priorities being addressed at the same time.  Illegal parking is not going to be answered ahead of an aggravated assault. Doesn’t that mean we need more police???

Gordon says many crimes are crimes of opportunity so do your part personally to prevent crime and don’t make yourself a target.  Lock your doors and windows and don’t walk down the street holding your iPhone out for the first guy coming along to grab it and run.  Don’t make yourself an easy target.

Participants at Frankford Forward meeting have already had Town Watch training and Gordon would like to add more participants from other blocks to be trained.

Residents expressed concern about the Democratic Party convention taking police away from Frankford.  Gordon reported that the department is using overtime to add manpower to the convention while maintaining police presence.  He did say that the recent attacks on police have had the effect of reducing the available patrols since officers have been patrolling 2 to a car.  We do not know how long that will need to continue.

Bridesburg resident asked about enforcement of the No Trucks ordinance on Richmond Street recently put into effect.  Gordon referred him to Officer Crosson the Community Relations officer.

The next PSA1 meeting will be held on August 25th at 7 PM at Aria Hospital.

Burglary in Northwood Topic at the Civic Meeting This Month

Thanks to Lieutenant Cannon from the 15th district for attending the Northwood Civic Assoc. meeting July 19th on a minutes notice. He came to the meeting prepared with the crime stats for our area and explained what was being done to combat these problems.

There were residents in attendance who were recently burglarized and told their stories; and hinted on why they may have been targeted. Open and/or unsecured windows seem to have been a factor in many of these burglaries, leading one to believe these are crimes of opportunity.

Keep our homes secure and work with neighbors through phone, text, and email to notify each other of anything you notice.

Other things discussed were abandoned homes and what we’re doing to get these places fixed and sold. Illegal fences in the neighborhood were discussed, as I have gotten dozens of calls in the past 2 weeks. All the ones reported to me were forwarded to 311 and L&I to let them handle it. If the fences remain we will discuss a civil action. We’re not trying to be bad neighbors, we’re simply preserving the value of everyone’s property and investment in our area. These fences destroy a neighborhoods character and other people’s home values.

I am working with a couple places to get great deals on home surveillance systems so they can be affordable to everyone, as well as motion lighting. I will be creating a survey to see who would be interested, this information will help me negotiate the best cost.

The next meeting of the Northwood Civic Association will be on August 16th at 7 PM at St. James Lutheran Church.
