The Devon

devon1What is the next best thing to having our own theater in Frankford?  Having one that is almost within walking distance.  The Devon fits that bill nicely and along with the live performances, they are offering a collection of classic movies showing on Thursday and Fridays in August.

I am old enough to remember the Devon in the golden age.  There were three theaters in the space of a few block in Mayfair.  The Mayfair at Cottman Avenue.  The Merben (I still remember seeing the Greatest Show on Earth at the Merben) a block south and the Devon.  Those were the days.

The Devon has been rebuilt almost from the ground up into a state of the art venue and it’s worth a visit.   Take a look at what’s available.

Rally for the State Budget

policeFrom Mike at West Frankford Town Watch:

FYI everyone, the Mayor will be at the 15th Police District tomorrow – Sunday 8/02/09 at 2pm to rally for the State Budget. He has advised that if there is no tax increase then we will lose 972 police officers and 200 fire personnel. It is so important that you be there. He chose the NE for a reason guys – we will get hit the most, we pay the most taxes and have the highest mortgages outside of the suburbs. Think about that.  If you do not show up and we suffer then you can thank yourself for not being there.  Remember, together we can make a difference.

Friends of Overington Park

Report from Diane on the cleanup last Saturday, July 25th:

We had 17 people come out and weed and mulch the trees and flower beds in Overington Park.
They worked from 10 until 2, an extra hour. We had water and soft pretzel donated by Tony Paton and Maria Quinones Sanchez.
I think the water kept them going.  Of course there was a nice breeze blowing through the park that day.
We left the park looking beautiful. The seeds we planted in April are flowering, beside the shrubs and perennials .
It looks great after a little elbow grease. Even better was the camaraderie that we felt at the end of the day. We sat with our hats on and spoke with our neighbors about the park, and the work we just completed. As people left the park they strolled one more time by the flower beds in the sun.
It was a good day.
Thanks again for your part in making it happen! Diane Kunze, Friend of Overington Park

Thanks Diane and all the volunteers for making Overington park the gem that it is.

American Lock Services

We’ve been trying to get a key made.  Sounds simple enough but life can be complicated.  Got some done at Lowes a while ago and that worked so we went back there and asked them to make a copy from the one they made before.  It worked fine.  Took those keys and not one of them worked.  So went back to Lowes and told them about that and they said OK we’ll do it again.  Took those keys and not one of those worked either.  So we took those back and gave up on Lowes.

locksmith smallWas coming up Frankford Avenue Tuesday morning and was passing 4320 Frankford Avenue.  Looked out to my left and there was a locksmith, American Lock Services.  Brilliant thought came to me that maybe they would be able to make a key.  I parked and went over.  It was about 10:30 but the door was locked.  I banged on the door and a nice lady with a Russian accent came to open it.

So I told her the problem and in one minute she had two keys ready to go.  She said sometimes people just don’t pay attention to what they are doing.  Bring them back if they don’t work.

They worked.

I kind of owe them this plug.  When I was doing the walk up Main Street video I originally had them in but cut them because I did such a poor shot of the store front.  In any case, we know they make keys pretty well.
